Preheat oven to 200 degrees centigrade

Mix dry ingredients together

Add treacle and buttermilk to the dry ingredients

If needed add a splash of water or milk

Mix together, it’s important to mix well

Add a bit of flour so the outside isn’t sticky

Shape and put into a hot oven at 200 degrees for 10 minutes

Then reduce the heat to 150 / 160 degrees for another 10 minutes

Remember oven temperatures vary, it should sound hollow when cooked and if in doubt test with a skewer, it should come out clean.  Cool on a rack….


2.25 oz self raising flour

4.5 oz wholemeal flour

2 teaspoons of bi-carbonate of soda

2.25 oz oatmeal

.5 oz bran

1 oz wheatgerm

1 good tsp salt

1 good tbsp black treacle

300ml buttermilk
